Review: The Body Shop Himalayan Charcoal Mask

Hello again! Welcome back to Hello Miss Marie.

Today I’m going to be reviewing a face mask that I’ve been loving for the past couple of weeks – The Body Shop’s Himalayan Charcoal Purifying mask. I was given this by a friend and it has become a staple in my skincare routine. I like to use face masks in general about once a week, or whenever my skin feels like it needs a bit of a pick-me-up!

The first thing I noticed when I opened up the pot was the big flakes of charcoal that will be nice and scrubby and exfoliating. Putting the mask on, you can feel that exfoliation which will help to give your pores a good clean, whilst the charcoal helps to draw out impurities and over time, help to keep skin clear and glowing.

After a minute or two, you can start to feel the mask working. It’s not the most pleasant feeling, it’s quite tingly, but certainly not as irritating as other masks I have tried. I have very sensitive skin so I regularly have to wash off new masks I’m trying after only a minute! This one feels a little strange but it doesn’t hurt my skin. After all, this is a mask to deep clean, not to nourish and soothe!

I leave the mask on for about 10 minutes, or until it’s dry, then use warm water and a washcloth to remove it. I will also say this – this is a messy process! Don’t use your favourite flannel to wash this mask off! You will also need to wipe down your sink…so that’s a minor drawback, but what can you expect from a charcoal product?

After one or two uses, my skin actually looked worse than before. I had a few blemishes – not what I was expecting! My friends said the same thing. Was this mask causing us all to break out? The theory I have is that the mask works by lifting all the crap that’s been sitting in your pores to the surface, which causes those spots. But, after a few weeks of regular use, my skin cleared up and just generally feels nice and clean and fresh.

I wish I could say I look more glowy, as promised by the mask, but I can’t see much of a difference in that respect. I actually don’t know of any products that really work to give your skin a glow, so as always, if you have a miracle product to recommend, let me know in the comments!
