Hand Luggage 101

Hey guys!

I recently ran a poll on Twitter asking what kind of content I should be writing more of, and the answer came back as *drumroll*…travel! I was really happy to see that my followers would like to read more travel pieces, especially since I’m itching to travel as much as I can this year.

Since I can’t up and leave right this moment (I’m still jetlagged from my journey back to Mexico…) I’m going to write a few tips on something that always causes me so much stress: packing hand luggage. It never used to be a big deal; I always used to stuff pretty much all that would fit into my rucksack, but recently, airlines I have been flying with have actually been checking the size and weight of hand luggage, which means I’ve had to think a bit more carefully about what to take on board.

Here are my thoughts, based on the past couple of years I’ve been travelling.

1. Always pack at least one full change of clothes. I learnt this the hard way when I travelled to LA, only to find my bag had been left in Guadalajara…and I had nothing to change into when I got to my hotel! Thankfully, I was with a friend who lent me some clothes, but had I been alone, I would have been in a bit of a pickle.

2. Wear a jumper and a coat to the airport. Even if it’s hot, wearing your coat will save you space in your bag and keep you warm on the plane (which will be cold, trust.)

3. Pack a mini moisturiser and lip balm. It’s no secret that the air on planes is dry AF and will suck the moisture out of your skin. I only recently started getting myself organised and making sure I pre-packed my little plastic bag with a moisturiser (less than 100ml) and lip balm (Vaseline is my fave.)

4. Also pack a toothbrush and toothpaste. On long-haul flights, you don’t want to be stuck for too long without brushing your teeth. Even if you haven’t eaten anything (you should also pack snacks, by the way) cleaning your teeth is an easy way to make yourself feel a bit fresher during a long, sleepy, cramped flight.

5. Have things to do. If you’re one of those lucky people who can sleep on planes, congrats! What’s your secret? Personally, unless I’ve been travelling for literally 30 hours straight, I probably won’t be getting any shut-eye whilst flying, so I always make sure I have my iPod, Kindle, and a notebook and pen to keep me occupied.

6. Make sure you check baggage allowance. All airlines are different, and some are really weird about their allowance (looking at you, Volaris.) So, before you fly, make sure you double check how many bags you can take, and what size and weight they can be.

7. Pack what you’ll need when you land. Depending on where you’re heading to, I mean sunglasses or a hat and scarf.

8. Kalms are the one. I will be writing a review about Kalms tablets at some point because although I was skeptical to try them, I find they really work for calming pre-flight nerves and also helping me sleep. If, like me, you hate flying and get anxious, consider giving them a try. Obviously, make sure to consult your doctor before taking any medicines, even herbal ones like Kalms.

I hope you found some of these tips useful. I also hope that you’ll all get to enjoy some amazing holidays or travelling this year! Let me know what you’re up to in the comments! Thanks for reading!

  1. These are great tips and things I’ve definitely learned to follow. Packing an extra change of clothes in case baggage is lost is something I wish I would’ve thought of before that happened to me 🙈 I love your travel posts, too! Excited to see more 🙂
